When you think of outdoor living you can think of a lot of visions of swinging chairs, patio furniture, badminton, lawn chairs, pool tables and grills. These all have their place and many more.
Negative thoughts of polished andeguarded granite and sandstone may not come to your minds, but they can. In public places these are normal sights and they are beautiful, but in private areas they can be beautiful and special. Getting rid of some of the preconceived ideas of what outdoor living can or should look like can be important. Just because a once beautiful and now saltwater view shed may have gone to the grave does not mean that it was wrong. Many of these outdoor spaces have stood the test of time.
The problem is that many people invest a lot of money into all the fancy outdoor coverings and all the grills and running lights, and they do not realize that they spent a lot of money on the wrong things. The biggest factor to consider is the weather. Will the weather be cold enough for you to be outside without the need of air conditioning? This must be taken into consideration as well. If it is going to be too cold, then you may want to consider partially insulating from the inside with layers of bubble wrap.
What about if it will be too sunny. Will a deck or patio be too warm if summer is near? If so, then you would need shade and you might want to add it with some snow. This is a very important issue when remodeling and changes in your outdoor area. The patio can become very dry in the summer and very sensitive to harsh exposure. If you don’t get enough water, or if the water on your patio will not evaporate fast enough, then you could need extra sprinkler systems installed.
It is often said that the look is as important as what you can actually do with the outdoor space. Is the look going to be pleasing to those who visit your home? You can always decorate the patio, deck, fence, or any open area with all the holiday summer décor, but if the area is not secure for the things you are going to be carrying out then security issues will have to be addressed.
What is the weather going to be like in your area this summer? The look and feel could decide whether everything eventually turns out just fine. If you are going to be sqecked in your heat, then perhaps you should add some windbreak fabric so that you will be adequately covered.
The temperature in early or late spring may be in a different zone from where you live, so your ability to make outdoor living an enjoyable experience will be different. If you are going to be shutting down your outdoor living on certain cold or rainy days, then you may want to consider windbreak screening or tarps or blankets etc. For many people, this will determine what they do to keep their outdoor space safe.
What is going to be happening to my patio or deck in the middle of the winter? If you are going to be using the patio or the deck to store things then you may want to consider a large heater, or heat lamps, so that you can keep things warm even if the wind is blowing in the sand outside.
If you are going to be using it to cook food or to entertain guests, then you may want to consider the possibility of either purchasing a fire pit, or have a tarp extended from the air source where it is going to be, that is a little out of the way, but close enough to at least heat the patio or deck area. Just keeping a fire going is a good way to keep things warm. If wood will not be available, then fiberglass Insulation panels are a good substitute for wood.
If you are going to be using the area for growing and cultivating plants and food, then it will be necessary to either grow plants in planters or pots, or to use some kind of greenhouse. Your plantings can stay fresh and safe during the colder days, or they can be protected from the elements.
There are many things to consider when you are outdoor living during the season. For most people there are plenty of options to consider, so don’t feel that your enjoyment is going to be restrained by things that won’t make the mood light.
So have a blast as you take a walk down the patio, grill and barbeque with the kids. After all, that should be what the whole family does.
